"Partners in Health

The five fundamental principles of our work are:

1. Access to primary health care
A strong foundation of primary care is critical to successfully treating specific diseases, such as AIDS. People seek care because they feel sick, not because they have a particular disease. When quality primary health care is accessible, the community develops new faith in the health system, which results in increased use of general medical services as well as services for more complex diseases. Therefore, PIH integrates infectious disease interventions within a wide range of basic health and social services.

2. Free health care and education for the poor
The imposition of user fees has resulted in empty clinics and schools, especially in settings where the burden of poverty and disease are greatest. Because both health and education are fundamental routes to development, it is counterproductive (not to mention immoral) to charge user fees for health care and education to those who need these services most and can afford them least. PIH works to ensure that cost does not prevent access to primary health care and education for the poor.

3. Community partnerships
Health programs should involve community members at all levels of assessment, design, implementation, and evaluation. Community health workers may be family members, friends, or even patients who provide health education, refer people who are ill to a clinic, or deliver medicines and social support to patients in their homes. Community health workers do not supplant the work of doctors or nurses; rather, they are a vital interface between the clinic and the community. In recognition of the critical role they play, they should be compensated for their work. PIH doesn’t tell the communities we serve what they need—they tell us.

4. Addressing basic social and economic needs
Fighting disease in impoverished settings also means fighting the poverty at the root of poor health. Achieving good health outcomes requires attending to peoples’ social and economic needs. Through community partners, PIH works to improve access to food, shelter, clean water, sanitation, education, and economic opportunities.

5. Serving the poor through the public sector
A vital public sector is the best way to bring health care to the poor. While nongovernmental organizations have a valuable role to play in developing new approaches to treating disease, successful models must be implemented and expanded through the public sector to assure universal and sustained access. Rather than establish parallel systems, PIH works to strengthen and complement existing public health infrastructure.

The work of PIH has three goals: to care for our patients, to alleviate the root causes of disease in their communities, and to share lessons learned around the world. Through long-term partnerships with our sister organizations, we bring the benefits of modern medical science to those most in need and work to alleviate the crushing economic and social burdens of poverty that exacerbate disease. PIH believes that health is a fundamental right, not a privilege.

Through service, training, advocacy, and research, we seek to raise the standard of care for the poor everywhere."

"Our names are John and Laurian Scott, and we are Thisbe and Noah’s parents. We will never get over the loss of our daughter and our son, and their suffering is something we will equally never be able to reconcile. The first step toward finding a cure is finding the causes of motor neuron degeneration. This research is already underway, including research for the gene causing Brown-Vialetto-Van Laere.

Once the BVVL gene is isolated, The Olive Branch Fund will initiate the next great leap: hiring a researcher for the cure. It is the mission of The Olive Branch Fund: A Thisbe and Noah Scott Legacy to promote research, awareness, and support for families of all pediatric motor neuron diseases, including Brown-Vialetto-Van Laere. As Thisbe and Noah’s parents, we can think of no better way to honor their lives than to assure that a motor neuron disease will never again take the life or health of another child."

Santa Angelina Worried About North Koreans!

Posted on 28 July 2010 by Perez Hilton

While Angelina Jolie was in Seoul, South Korea to promote Salt, the actress had the opportunity to learn about North Korean defectors from officials in the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees!

She reveals:

“They spoke a lot about the concerns about people being persecuted when they are sent back to North Korea. I’m very concerned about the people. I learned today about them gaining citizenship and crossing into South Korea. The UNHCR practices quiet diplomacy in which they do more than they talk about.”

Could they have chosen anyone better to be a goodwill ambassador?

She's amazing!

Man Successfully Receives Full Face Transplant!

Posted on 26 July 2010 by Perez Hilton

Absolutely unbelievable!

A Spanish man, who was left unable to breathe or eat without assistance after accidentally shooting himself in the face five years ago, was the first successful recipient of a full face transplant!

The procedure, led by Dr. Joan Pere Barrett, apparently took a full 24 hour, and involved lifting an entire face (including cheekbones, teeth, and muscle) and moving it onto the man, and he is expected to get up 90% of all facial functions back!

Although his body has since attempted to reject the face twice, it was successfully saved with medication, and he's being sent home to finish his recovery!

The patient's sister reveals that her brother is looking forward to doing "little things, like walking down the street without anyone looking at him, or sitting down for a meal with his family. Doing things that all of us do on a normal day."

We never stop being amazed at what modern science can help us accomplish.

We wish the man nothing but the best and hope that the rest of his recovery period goes by smoothly!

Thoughts??

When Madonna has an idea, it's nothing but the biggest and the best for Madge!

The pop icon is currently following the footsteps of Bob Geldof by planning a Live Aid type charity concert to benefit Malawi, which will be shown on TV around the world.

She has already called several of her celeb friends, including Bono, to perform at the Walk Out of Poverty concert in September.

A source at her Raising Malawi charity has confirmed that plans are well underway so that Madonna "make(s) this the biggest fund-raiser the world has ever seen. (She) is throwing everything into it. She knows the bigger the event the more money will be raised."

We know that if Madonna is planning it, it will be amazing! We can't wait to see who else she lines up for the concert!

And she is doing some good too!

On Wednesday, Ke$sha woke up from a sound, SOBER sleep, brushed her teeth with TOOTHPASTE and headed over to the Staples Center, where she took some time out to talk to high school students.

Her generosity is part of the Grammy SoundChecks program that offers students the chance to meet with major recoriding artists from a candid Q&A discussion.

So clean! So sweet!

If only it would last longer than an afternoon!

Lt. Dan Choi Discharged From The Army!

Posted on 23 July 2010 by Perez Hilton

ap100202125587jb__opt.jpg

So infuriating and unfortunate.

Lt. Dan Choi, the Iraq war veteran who bravely outed himself to fight Don't Ask, Don't Tell, has been officially discharged from the Army National Guard because of his 'violation' of the ridiculous policy.

He says in a statement:

"After 11 years since beginning my journey at West Point and after 17 months of serving openly as an infantry officer this is both an infuriating and painful announcement. My service continues. Remaining silent when our family and community members are fired or punished for who they truly are would be an unequivocal moral dereliction that tarnishes the honor of the uniform and insults the meaning of America. I don’t consider myself a victim. As sad as I am, I’m not a victim. My unit is a victim."

What a courageous man. It truly is our country's loss to lose him as member of the armed services.

We hope this doesn't deter him from his fight for equal rights! We are 100% behind you, bb!

Change WILL happen!

EQUAL RIGHTS FOR EVERYONE!
